Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) in Poland: analysis of patient series and practical guidelines for breast surgeons
CONCLUSIONS: BIA-ALCL is scarce in the Polish population. In a short-term follow-up, patients' prognosis remains excellent. Due to the withdrawal of roughly textured implants from the market and the exclusion of likely the most potent etiologic factor, it might be expected that the incidence of BIA-ALCL will become even rarer.PMID:37732037 | PMC:PMC10507758 | DOI:10.5114/aoms.2020.100637

Prognostic significance of tumour budding in Merkel cell carcinoma
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(2):144-147. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.129404.ABSTRACTPrognostic factors in Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) are scarce. Tumour budding (TB) has been shown to have a prognostic role in different cancers but has not been explored in MCC. We aimed to determine if TB influences survival in MCC. We performed a retrospective evaluation of 45 cases of MCC in a cancer centre. This included a survival analysis involving TB in patients with MCC, and we searched for variables associated with TB. The mean age of the patients was 69 years. Histologically, the average Breslow was 11.36 mm, and the mean mitotic rate was 31.9...

CD98 expression can be a predictive factor of resistance to radiotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(2):122-130. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.128695.ABSTRACTCD98 is a marker of cancer stem cells, and it regulates radiosensitivity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The current study aimed to investigate whether CD98 can be used as a prognostic factor and marker of radioresistance. CD98 immunostaining was performed using biopsy specimens collected from patients diagnosed with HNSCC. The average period of postoperative monitoring was 31.6 months. The treatment options were radiation therapy with either cisplatin or cetuximab, and surgery. The participants were divided into groups of low and high...

Clinical role of CD274 (PD-L1) and CD3+ lymphocytes in predicting high risk in advanced colorectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy
In this study, we investigated the role of CD274 (programmed cell death-ligand 1 - PD-L1) and CD3+ tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in the prognosis of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We retrospectively examined primary tumour specimens from stage III/IV CRC patients operated on between 2008 and 2018. We found a significant association between these biomarkers and pT stage (PD-L1, p = 0.020; CD3+TILs, p = 0.025), tumour grade (PD-L1, p = 0.005; CD3+TILs, p = 0.004), positive surgical margin (PD-L1, p = 0.001; CD3+TILs, p = 0.001), MSI (PD-L1, p < 0.001; CD3+TILs, p ...

Prognosis-related novel immunostaining pattern for programmed cell death ligand 1 and prognostic value of tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes in triple-negative breast cancer
This study aims to determine the prognostic significance of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in triple- negative breast cancer (TNBC). PD-L1 expression and TIL percentage were determined in TNBCs that did not receive neoadjuvant therapy. The relationship between PD-L1 expression and the percentage of TILs with survival was investigated. The presence of intratumoural PD-L1-positive tumour-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs) in tumours with ≥ 1% PD-L1 expression was identified as a new PD-L1 evaluation parameter. The presence of intratumoural PD-L1-positive TIICs as...

Health of people with selected citizenships in Germany: prevalence of non-communicable diseases and associated social as well as migration-related factors
DISCUSSION: Given the importance of subjective sense of belonging to the society in Germany and self-reported experience of discrimination for the health outcomes studied, the results point to health inequalities among people with selected citizenships that may indicate mechanisms of social exclusion.PMID:37728772 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03767-4

Effect of invitation letter in language of origin on screening attendance: randomised controlled trial in BreastScreen Norway
CONCLUSIONS: No difference in attendance was observed between immigrant women invited to BreastScreen Norway in their language of origin and in Norwegian compared with Norwegian only. Several barriers to cancer screening may exist among immigrants, and translating the invitation is probably only a part of a complex explanation.TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT04672265.CLINICALTRIALS: gov NCT04672265.PMID:37726122 | DOI:10.1136/bmj-2023-075465

Screening of Potential Probiotic < em > Lactobacillaceae < /em > and Their Improvement of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by Promoting PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathway in db/db Mice
Pol J Microbiol. 2023 Sep 20;72(3):285-297. doi: 10.33073/pjm-2023-028. eCollection 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTThe study aimed to isolate Lactobacillaceae strains with in vitro hypoglycemic activity and probiotic properties and to determine their antidiabetic abilities in vivo. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 22, L. plantarum 25, Limosilactobacillus fermentum 11, and L. fermentum 305 with high in vitro hypoglycemic activity were screened from 23 strains of Lactobacillaceae isolated from human feces and identified by 16S rDNA sequencing. The fasting blood glucose (FBG) of the mice was recorded weekly. After 12 weeks, liver, kidney, a...

How to optimize the use of diuretics in patients with heart failure?
Kardiol Pol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.33963/v.kp.97315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConsidering the pathophysiology and the clinical presentation of heart failure, the use of diuretics or drugs with diuretic properties are indispensable for an adequate management of heart failure patients. However, in clinical practice, fluid expansion is often undiagnosed and diuretic therapy is not always adequately titrated. Today, several drug classes with diuretic properties are available in addition to classical thiazides, thiazide-like and loop diuretics. The purpose of this short review is to discuss the different ways to optimize di...
